Skating
Many canals and (wide) ditches are used for skating whenever it is
cold enough to freeze them over (not every winter: January temperatures
in the Netherlands are mostly around zero Celsius, with extremes of +10
to −20). Every few years the ice is strong enough for touring the
countryside on skates. Typical distances are 10–30 kilometers, but
ardent skaters may go for longer trips, up to the Elfstedentocht,
which takes the participants on a 200km tour of the 11 Cities of
Friesland Province.
